James B Moore Open Heart Chronicles. Poems

With transformative and soul-searching vulnerability, James B. Moore reveals the arc of his lived experience and the story of a man’s gradual shift through the many stages of maturity. Throughout this memorable collection, Moore’s poetry always returns to matters of the heart. Some pieces meditate on the loving, supportive partnership Moore has built with his wife. Others explore his gradual realization that life contains moments and experiences that transcend the physical. Finally, in a literal interpretation of the title, Moore writes candidly and humorously about his experiences with life-threatening cardiac illness. Medical professionals have found his descriptions of the power of the healing arts particularly meaningful. Open Heart Chronicles follows Moore’s poetry collection Spirit Unchained (2015).

Harry Ross-Lewin With the Thirty-Second in Peninsular and Other Campaigns. Experiences of a British Infantry Officer Throughout Napoleonic Wars

A British infantry officer of Wellington's ArmyHarry Ross-Lewin is yet another of that small band of British soldiers of the Napoleonic era who wrote a memoir of his military service and in so doing left for posterity an invaluable volume of source material including his experiences of camp, campaign and battlefield, as well insightful perspectives on the campaigns of which he was part. Like Wellington himself, Ross-Lewin came from a family of Anglo-Irish aristocrats. It was then perhaps inevitable he would enter the militia and subsequently transfer into the regular army. This was time of great military adventure and opportunity. Ross-Lewin saw the siege and fall of Copenhagen, took part in the battles Roleia and Vimiera, the assault on Flushing and the storming of the Salamanca forts where he was severely wounded. His Peninsular War continued with the unsuccessful siege of Burgos and the retreat that followed, Badajos and the battle of Orthes as the campaign rolled through the Pyrenees to its conclusion in Southern France and Napoleon's abdication. The 32nd were called to battle once again for the Belgian Campaign of 1815 as Napoleon sought to regain the imperial crown as part of Kempt's 8th Brigade. The brigade was heavily engaged at both Quatre Bras and Waterloo itself sustaining over 1300 casualties. This is a riveting and essential first hand account of the sharp end of Napoleonic warfare and no enthusiast of the period will wish it to be absent from their l...

Richard D Henegan Campaigns with the Field Train. Experiences of a British Officer During Peninsula and Waterloo Napoleonic Wars

High adventure serving the 'Iron Duke'The task of the Field Train was to support the Artillery-to which it was associated and shared uniform-with the supply of the essential materials of that particular branch of military service. Richard Henegan, the author of this book, was a senior officer of the Field Train and to him fell the responsibility of the procurement of huge quantities of ammunition and ordinance to the army at large and to units on the field of battle itself. Henegan spent seven years campaigning in Portugal, Spain and the South of France as an essential part of the Duke of Wellington's army. His time there provided a host of experiences-both on campaign and on the field of battle-together with thrilling interludes which he reports with detail, drama and often with wry humour which will remain with the reader of this substantial memoir for page after page. Henegan's account was originally published in two volumes, here combined by Leonaur -in their entirety-into a single edition. Henegan's adventures conclude on the bloody field of Waterloo as Napoleon's empire is finally brought to its knees.

John Edgecombe Daniel Portugal to Waterloo With Wellington. the Journal of a British Commissariat Officer During Peninsular War and Campaign 1815

A reporter's eye on great historical eventsReaders may be of the initial opinion that the view of an officer of the Commissariat Department would be necessarily less dynamic than that of a regimental officer. In fact, Daniel's position as a non-combatant has proved to be the exact opposite and of particular value to those interested in his subject matter by his comparative detachment from the narrow and confused view of the actual battle line. Daniel was able to overview the great events of which he was a participant and leave us essential reports that few were in a position to witness. Actually, Daniel was often close enough to the action as to have comrades killed next to him, so this is far from a view 'from behind the lines.' We follow Daniel on campaign with the 'Great Duke' throughout the Peninsula, over the Pyrenees and into Southern France. When the time comes to bring the Emperor to account at Waterloo, Daniel once again joined Wellington's Army in the field and he has provided another vital insight into the campaign of 1815 to enhance our knowledge of these pivotal events.

Robert Brown Corporal B Campaigns in the Low Countries. Recollections of a Coldstream Guard Early Against Revolutionary France 1793-1795

A new version of a very rare text of the Coldstream Guards at WarThe Campaign in the Low Countries is rarely covered in books concerning the experiences of the British Army. It was fought against the armies of Revolutionary France at a time when Napoleon was still a junior officer. It has been overshadowed by the war in Spain and the Waterloo Campaign-probably because it was a military disaster for the allied armies-and popular history is inclined to dwell on the victories of Wellington that followed. Many a soldier would look back upon this campaign as 'the one that taught us what NOT to do'. Nevertheless, it remains a fascinating episode in British military history and this book-written by a very active participant-brings it vibrantly to life. Robert Brown was a highly literate other rank in the Coldstream Guards. He recorded his experiences in riveting detail and left us with a view of warfare in the late eighteenth century which is both entertaining and essential as a prelude to the experiences of soldiers in the Napoleonic Wars which would shortly follow. Brown's text, originally presented in the archaic style of 1795, has been substantially reworked by Frederick Llewellyn making it easily accessible for the contemporary reader for the first time. A short summary of the campaign is also included to give Brown's narrative context.

Edward A. Moore S Cannoneer. Experiences with the Rockbridge Artillery, Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, During American Civil War

From the outbreak of war to Appomattox For those interested in the Confederate effort during the American Civil War this book is an essential memoir. 'Ned' Moore takes us into battle with the Rockbridge Artillery and gives us an account of the Southern Army on campaign throughout the entire war with a battery that was never far from the action. Moore's experiences of battle read like a regimental battle honour role-Kernstown, McDowell, Winchester, Port Republic, Cold Harbor, Cedar Run, Manassas Junction, Chantilly, Sharpsburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and others are all reported in clear entertaining detail. The personalities of the battery and their personal experience under fire are graphically described. This is a well written account that takes the reader to the heart of the times and events when history was being made. A regimental role is included which makes this book invaluable for genealogists.

T. Gowing of the Royal Fusiliers. The Experiences a Fusilier on Campaign During Crimean War, Indian Mutiny and Umballah 1853-72

A classic account of the Fusiliers on Campaign by a soldier authorThere was a time when Timothy Gowing's book about his campaigns with the 7th-The Royal Fusiliers-made him one of the most well known 'other ranks' authors in Victorian England. He not only wrote the work, but published and distributed it personally with some success. There are few books which recall the life of the ordinary infantryman in the Crimean War more literately and compellingly than his. Gowing's experiences of the latter part of the Indian Mutiny and during the Umballah Expedition to Afghanistan in 1863 also give useful insights into the Fusiliers at war on the sub-continent. When he faithfully recalls his own experiences-especially in the Crimea-he paints a startlingly clear picture of the campaigns, battles, trench warfare and bloody 'no quarter' skirmishes. He is also an important reference source for conditions on the field after the battle, in camp, and on the medical care of the wounded and diseased and the supply of clothing, equipment and rations to the men of the British Army during the Victorian period. Gowing's recollections are fascinatingly augmented here by the inclusion of his regular letters to his parents written as events unfolded around him. Gowing's book ran to several substantial and varied editions which not only included his own experiences but poetry, polemics, religious diatribe, and potted accounts of people and events that were outside his own...

F. C. Beatson Wellington and the Pyrenees Campaign Volume I. From Vitoria to Bidassoa

The final phase of the campaign in the Iberian PeninsulaF. C. Beatson's famous trilogy on the genius of the Duke of Wellington as military commander as he led his 'old peninsular army' towards victory is a classic study of the 'great captain of the age' at the height of his powers. It is also an account of the British Army on campaign that encompasses both strategy and tactics together with the personal narratives of the soldiers who took part in these fascinating battles of the Napoleonic Wars. The days of French dominance of Spain and the British war of retreat and defence are over. Everywhere it is Napoleon's French Army that is retiring and it appears that the pivotal battle of Vitoria has heralded their decline. Between the French and their homeland stretches the great natural barrier of the Pyrenees mountain range--difficult terrain ideal for defence. Over the border lay vital resources for the continuance of the war. Marshal Soult believes all is not lost and he intends to throw the advancing Wellington back and regain the offensive.

Anthony Bruce The Last Crusade. Palestine Campaign in the First World War

This is the first full account of World War I in Palestine since the official history published in the 1920s. It was a tough and fast-moving campaign, fought against a formidable enemy in harsh terrain and sometimes stupefying heat. Its highpoints - T.E. Lawrence's capture of Aqaba with a charge of Arab horsemen, and Allenby's victory march through the walled city of Jerusalem with fighters overhead and volleys of machine-gun fire in the streets - are classic moments in the history of warfare, but there is more that is equally gripping; the battles of Gaza were among the most hard-fought, and the battle of Megiddo among the most brilliant and decisive victories of the entire war.;Hostilities began with the defence of the Suez Canal, Britain's jugular, against the Ottoman Turks and their German allies. The Allies' thrust into Palestine when Allenby took over from the less aggressive Murray, and Lawrence harnessing the irregular forces of Arab nationalism, were much needed victories. In contrast to the failures at Gallipoli and in Mesopotamia, or the inconclusive battles on the Western Front, Palestine's view of movement and dramatic success made an essential contribution to the Allied will to win. Anthony Bruce has produced a comprehensive military history of the campaign, drawing on the full range of sources including the experiences of those who took part."Bruce is not only a fine miltary historian but an engaging writer who makes the narrative seems ...

S. D. Broughton Cavalry Surgeon. On Campaign Against Napoleon in the Peninsula . South of France During Napoleonic Wars 1812-1814

He served with this elite cavalry regiment throughout the campaigns in Portugal, Spain and into the South of France and in the concluding battle for Toulouse. Broughton's take on the campaign as it appears in this collection of his letters-originally published in 1815-reveals a man with a keen eye for the details of the countryside through which he travelled and the habits and cultures of the people he met. This a very personal account of war from an observant and thoughtful medical man who clearly wanted to share his experiences of a journey through wartime. De Benneville Randolph Keim S Troopers on the Borders. Winter Campaign of U.S. Army Against Indian Tribes Southern Plains, 1868-9

Personal experiences of war against the Plains IndiansWith the conclusion of the Civil War the American nation turned once again to its 'Manifest Destiny' in earnest, and as the influence of the 'white man' became an ever greater burden upon the hitherto wild western frontier the inevitable escalation of antipathy and open warfare flared with the indigenous Indian tribes of the Great Plains. The 'Winter Campaign ' of 1868 saw the military men who had become household names during the war between the States-among them Sheridan and Custer-once more in the field to subjugate the Sioux, the Cheyenne and their allies. This campaign is reported here by one who took part in it-one of that resolute breed of nineteenth century journalists the special correspondent. So the story of Forsyth's defence of Beecher's Island, The Battle of the Washita and other famous and notable fights are eloquently recounted within these pages together with the writers own personal experiences of camp, campaign and conflict. This is an excellent chronicle of the Plains Indian Wars and an essential addition to every library of the subject. Available in hardback with dust jacket for collectors and a softback edition.

George Simmons Lieutenant of the 95th (Rifles). Recollections Peninsula, South France . Waterloo Campaigns Napoleonic Wars

A subalterns war in 'rifle green' against the FrenchGeorge Simmons, one of a large family, came from a comparatively humble background. Like so many of his countrymen of his time, he chose a military career fighting Napoleon's French Army. He craved action and knew that the place to find it was as one of Wellington's green sharpshooters-the famous 95th-the Rifles. His experiences on campaign and on the battlefield are recounted in detail through his journal and letters to his family. Simmons, accompanied by his brother Joe, fought with the Rifles throughout the war in the Iberian peninsula and over the Pyrenees into the south of France. Another brother, Maud, fought as a red coated infantry officer. After Napoleon escaped from Elba, Simmons was once more called to the front-this time on the bloody and apocalyptic fields outside Waterloo where he was dangerously wounded. This is a story of war told by a junior officer at the sharp end of the action on many of the famous battles and assaults of the campaigns in which he took part. This Leonaur edition of Simmons' story, with the text substantially re-presented for the modern reader, is an essential book for those interested in the Rifles and a vital addition to every library of Napoleonic history.

Harry Smith, William Surtees The 95th (Rifles) in America. the Experiences of Two Soldiers During War 1812

Rifle green to AmericaWithAccompanying Histories of the Campaign and Regiment in the Periodby Eric Sheppard and William CopeRelations between the British Empire and its former-rebellious-colony in America were understandably strained in the half century following the War of Independence. While the British Army struggled with the Emperor of the French in Spain, open hostility broke out on the new nations border with British Canada. As Britain's war apparently drew to a close in the South of France upon Napoleon's abdication experienced regiments from Wellington's Peninsula Army were detailed to sail across the Atlantic to join the struggle. Among them were elements of the 95th-the famous green-jacketed riflemen. Fortunately for posterity two of those soldiers, Harry Smith and William Surtees, elected to write accounts of their experiences. Leonaur has included these two essential accounts in this volume, together with an account of the doings of the 95th in America and a general overview of the war, to give modern readers an insight into the latter stages of this Napoleonic period war, from a rifleman's perspective, up to and beyond the catastrophic battle before New Orleans that concluded hostilities. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket.

E. W. Buckham A Staff Officer in the Peninsula. an of British Corps Cavalry During Peninsula Campaign Napoleonic Wars

E. W. Buckham was a professional soldier involved in staff duties, who-along with many other gentlemen of the period-was determined to enjoy his war against Napoleon's French in Spain and Portugal. His duties on the staff enabled Buckham to take advantage of a freedom of movement impossible for regimental officers. As an educated man he pursued his journey through the countryside of the Peninsula, taking detailed account of the people, customs and places of interested that he came across. He recorded his experiences, chiefly for the entertainment of family and friends. This gentle account of Wellington's army on campaign, published originally in 1827, is an extremely rare book on the antiquarian market; it provides students of the period with invaluable background insights into the personality and times of a participant in momentous events.

With the 95th (Rifles) During the Napoleonic Wars-Adventures in the Rifle Brigade & Random Shots from a RiflemanUnabridged, Unedited and Newly Revised-Kincaid's experiences with the famous RiflesJohn Kincaid's recollections of his time soldiering under Wellington with the famous green coated riflemen of the 95th are perhaps the most famous accounts by an officer of this corps d'elite on campaign against Napoleon's French Army during the Peninsular War and in the Campaign of 1815 as the Emperor was finally brought to account at Waterloo. His first book, Adventures was well received in his own time which led him-by public demand as it were-to produce a sequel, Random Shots. Both are included in this special Leonaur edition in their full original texts-unlike some editions of Kincaid's works. Kincaid was a personable character, full of fun and well liked by his brother officers of the 95th. Predictably his likeable personality shines through his recollections providing a clear justification for their appeal and popularity. For the historian, Kincaid was, of course the consummate rifleman and his soldiering took him on campaign and onto many of the battlefields of the Peninsular War, over the Pyrenees and into Southern France. His descriptions of the 95th in action are invaluable as his Waterloo memoir. This is a bumper helping of 'Rifleman Green' for every enthusiast to enjoy.
